Threipmuir Reservoir and Harlaw Reservoir 5.5km loop

Written by:

A peaceful 5.5 km Pentlands loop circling two historic reservoirs, offering open water views, rolling hills in the distance, and flatter lakeside trails. This is a refreshing escape from the city — ideal for steady trail mileage without committing to a full hill day.

Route Overview

Distance: 5.5km
Style: Lakeside trail loop
Start & Finish: Parking near the reservoirs
Surface: Compact gravel trails and dirt paths
Best Time to Run: Clear mornings for still water reflections or breezy afternoons in summer

The Route

1️⃣ Threipmuir & Harlaw Reservoir Loop

Start from the parking area and join the lakeside trail connecting Threipmuir Reservoir (to the west) and Harlaw Reservoir (to the east).

Built in the mid-1800s to support Edinburgh’s growing water supply, both reservoirs now provide scenic, runnable paths with expansive views across the Pentland Hills.

The terrain here is mostly compact gravel with gentle undulations — flatter than many Pentlands routes — making it ideal for maintaining rhythm. The open water sits to one side while rolling hills frame the horizon, creating a spacious, airy feel throughout the run.

2️⃣ Return Stretch

Continue looping back toward the parking area, following the reservoir edge. The final kilometre offers wide, unobstructed views across the water and surrounding hills.

The surface remains consistent and forgiving underfoot, allowing for either a relaxed cool-down or a slightly quicker finish.

Why This Route Works

  • Scenic lakeside setting with open Pentlands views
  • Flatter option compared to typical hill-heavy routes
  • Compact trail surface suitable for steady pacing
  • Quiet, traffic-free environment
  • Perfect mid-distance escape from Edinburgh
