Reigate Fort & Colley Hill 4.8km Downs Loop

Written by:

A compact North Downs run with big rewards, this 4.75km loop climbs quickly to sweeping Surrey views before rolling along open hilltop trails.

It’s shorter than your usual 5km, but hillier — and the scenery more than makes up for the distance.

Route Overview

Distance: 4.8km
Style: Circular hill loop
Start & Finish: Car park on Colley Hill
Surface: Trail, chalk paths & grass
Best Time to Run: Clear mornings or sunset

The Route

1️⃣ Colley Hill Car Park

Begin from the parking area and ease onto the North Downs ridge path. The elevation is noticeable early — short climbs, nothing extreme, but enough to warm the legs.

2️⃣ Reigate Fort

Within the first kilometre you’ll reach Reigate Fort, built in 1898 as part of the London Defence Scheme.

It adds a historic layer to the run, with open grassland surrounding the structure and wide views developing behind you.

3️⃣ Inglis Memorial

Continue along the ridge to the striking Inglis Memorial, originally built as a drinking fountain for horses.

This is one of the best natural pause points — expansive views across the Surrey countryside.

4️⃣ Colley Hill Viewpoint

The highlight of the route is the sweeping panorama from Colley Hill, overlooking the Weald towards the South Downs.

On a clear day, the visibility feels endless.

5️⃣ Return Loop

The route gently curves back across open hillside and woodland edge, with undulating terrain keeping it interesting before returning to the car park.

Short, scenic and satisfying.
