The Route
1️⃣ SS Great Britain
Start near the harbourside bus stop and head toward the SS Great Britain — the world’s first iron-hulled, propeller-driven ocean liner, designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
It’s one of Bristol’s most iconic landmarks and sets the tone for a run steeped in maritime history. The wide paths here make for an easy, relaxed opening stretch.
2️⃣ Grain Barge
Continue along the waterfront past the Grain Barge — quite literally beers on a boat. Moored permanently in the harbour, it adds character to the route and gives the run a distinctly Bristol feel. The surface remains smooth and flat, ideal for finding a steady rhythm.
3️⃣ Bristol Floating Harbour
Follow the path around the edge of the Floating Harbour. This long, open stretch is excellent for maintaining pace. The route is popular with walkers and cyclists, but the paths are wide enough to keep moving comfortably.
The flat terrain makes this a great section for tempo work or conversational running.
4️⃣ Return Past SS Great Britain
Loop back toward the SS Great Britain for a second perspective of this historic vessel. From 1845 to 1854, it was the largest and most technologically advanced passenger ship in the world — a reminder of Bristol’s engineering heritage as you tick past the halfway mark.
5️⃣ Spike Island
Pass through Spike Island, a creative and cultural hub within the harbour. This short stretch adds variety, with converted industrial buildings and open spaces breaking up the waterside rhythm.
6️⃣ Pero’s Bridge
Cross Pero’s Bridge, the distinctive pedestrian swing bridge connecting the historic Old City with Millennium Square. It’s one of the most recognisable crossing points in the harbour and offers a great mid-run viewpoint over the water.
7️⃣ Closing the Loop
Complete the circuit along the final stretch of waterfront paths, returning to the starting bus stop. The flat, consistent terrain makes for a comfortable cool-down while still soaking in the energy of the harbourside.
