Written by:

A dramatic 5.75 km woodland and riverside loop combining suspension bridge views, flowing forest trails, and the peaceful Avon Gorge riverside path. This route blends elevation, scenery, and runnable terrain — ideal for a mid-distance effort with visual reward throughout.

Route Overview

Distance: 5.7km
Style: Woodland trail with riverside return
Start & Finish: Parking near Leigh Woods
Surface: Woodland trails, compact dirt paths, riverside gravel
Best Time to Run: Early morning for quieter trails and soft light across the gorge

The Route

1️⃣ View of Clifton Suspension Bridge (

Start from the parking area and head toward the iconic viewpoint overlooking the Avon Gorge. From here, you’re rewarded with one of Bristol’s most famous sights — the Clifton Suspension Bridge spanning dramatically across the gorge, with the city rising behind it.

Just behind the viewpoint lies Stokeleigh Camp, an Iron Age hillfort, adding a sense of history to the opening section. It’s a gentle start with a steady incline to get the legs working.

2️⃣ Nightingale Valley Downhill Trail

From the viewpoint, transition into the woodland and take on the Nightingale Valley downhill trail. This is a flowing, enjoyable descent that begins gradually before becoming more dynamic as you weave through trees.

The surface is mostly compact dirt with some roots underfoot, so light trail shoes help here. It’s a playful section that breaks up the steady climbing of the first kilometre.

3️⃣ Pill Path Along the Avon Gorge

At the base of the descent, join the Pill Path — a scenic riverside stretch following the Avon toward Pill village.

This section flattens out and allows you to settle into rhythm. The wide gravel path is popular with walkers and cyclists but generally easy to navigate.

Running alongside the river with towering gorge cliffs above creates a calm but dramatic atmosphere.

4️⃣ Return Climb Through Leigh Woods

Loop back upward through woodland paths toward the starting point. This final section brings a steady climb, making it a strong fitness builder without being overwhelming.

The tree cover offers shade in warmer months, and the winding ascent keeps the effort varied before finishing back at the parking area.
