A varied 6.9 km city loop linking Cliftonwood viewpoints, harbourside paths, and some of Bristol’s most recognisable landmarks. Expect steady climbs, waterfront stretches, and dramatic views of the Avon Gorge — a balanced urban run with plenty of character.

Route Overview

Distance: 6.9km
Style: Urban loop with viewpoints and waterfront paths
Start & Finish: Train station (central Bristol)
Surface: Pavement, cobbled sections, compact riverside paths
Best Time to Run: Early morning for quieter streets or golden hour for bridge views

The Route

1️⃣ View of Cliftonwood

Start from the train station and head toward Cliftonwood, climbing gradually through colourful terraced streets. As you gain elevation, the views open up across the harbourside and toward the Avon Gorge. This first section provides a steady uphill effort, perfect for building intensity early in the run.

2️⃣ Brunel Way Pump Track

Descend toward Brunel Way, passing the lively pump track nestled beneath the gorge. With the iconic bridge towering above, this section feels dynamic and energetic. The terrain transitions back to flatter ground as you prepare to rejoin the waterfront.

3️⃣ View of Clifton Suspension Bridge

Take in one of Bristol’s most famous views — the Clifton Suspension Bridge spanning the Avon Gorge. Whether bathed in morning light or silhouetted at dusk, it’s a standout moment in the route and a natural place to briefly steady your pace.

4️⃣ Chocolate Paving Pedestrian Path

Follow the narrow waterfront path known locally for its distinctive paving. This stretch runs close to the water and is particularly scenic at high tide. The surface can be slightly uneven in places, so it’s best suited to steady, controlled pacing rather than sprint efforts.

5️⃣ Wapping Wharf

Continue toward Wapping Wharf, one of Bristol’s most vibrant harbourside quarters. Once a working shipyard, it’s now packed with independent eateries and cultural spots, including the nearby M Shed museum.

The atmosphere here is lively, especially in the evenings, adding energy to the final third of the run.

6️⃣ Closing the Loop

Complete the loop along the flat harbourside paths, gradually returning to the train station. This final stretch is smooth and consistent, ideal for either a controlled tempo finish or a relaxed cool-down to round off the route.
