The Route
1️⃣ Etherow Lake
Begin near the main lake and weir at Etherow Country Park. The opening stretch runs alongside calm water with wide, easy paths — perfect for warming up.
Etherow was one of the UK’s first country parks, opened in 1968, and the historic landscape still feels spacious and open.
2️⃣ Compstall Nature Reserve
At around 1.8km, you’ll move into Compstall Nature Reserve, a peaceful mix of woodland and wetland habitat.
This is the most tranquil section of the run — tree cover, birdsong and soft trail surfaces.
3️⃣ Weir Waterfall
Approaching 4km, you’ll pass the Weir Waterfall, where the river gathers pace over stone. It’s a scenic turning point and one of the park’s most photogenic features.
The paths here remain largely flat and accessible.
4️⃣ Closing the Loop
From the weir, follow the connecting paths back toward the main lake and car park. The final kilometre is smooth and relaxed — ideal for cooling down and enjoying the water views one last time.
