A scenic 5 km coastal loop along the Silverknowes Esplanade in Edinburgh. This flat route hugs the waterfront, offering wide, open paths and stunning views over the Firth of Forth — ideal for a brisk weekend run or a casual training session.

Route Overview

Distance: 5.1km
Style: Coastal promenade loop
Start & Finish: Silverknowes Esplanade
Surface: Paved promenade paths, flat and smooth
Best Time to Run: Early morning or late afternoon for quieter paths and best light

The Route

1️⃣ Silverknowes Esplanade

Begin at the start of the promenade and head west along the Silverknowes Esplanade, taking in sweeping coastal views.

This stretch is ideal for warming up, with wide paths that allow for easy pacing and room to overtake without congestion.

On Saturdays, this area hosts a popular 5 km park run with around 400–500 participants, so it’s lively and motivating if you run then.

2️⃣ Full Promenade Loop

Continue along the esplanade, looping back to complete the full circuit. The flat, smooth paths make it easy to maintain a consistent pace while enjoying views of the Firth of Forth, nearby beaches, and occasional wildlife along the shoreline.

Gentle bends and open vistas keep the run visually interesting, and the promenade is wide enough for a comfortable solo run or group training session.

3️⃣ Closing the Run

Return to the starting point to complete the loop.

The smooth finish allows a steady cool-down while still taking in the scenic waterfront before heading home or stopping for a post-run coffee nearby.
