The Route
1️⃣ Birmingham Canal Main Line
Begin near the bus stop access point to the Birmingham Canal Main Line. Ease into your pace along the wide towpath — this first stretch is smooth and ideal for finding rhythm.
You’ll quickly feel separated from city traffic, even though you’re in the UK’s second city.
2️⃣ 5MO Graffiti Wall
Around the 1.5km mark you’ll pass the famous 5MO Graffiti Wall, one of Birmingham’s most photographed canal features. The artwork here changes regularly, bringing colour and personality to the industrial backdrop.
It’s a great psychological checkpoint early in the run.
3️⃣ Toward The Cube & The Mailbox
Continue along the water as the scenery shifts from industrial to modern waterside development. Soon you’ll reach the striking architecture of The Cube and The Mailbox, positioned along the Worcester & Birmingham Canal.
This section feels lively and polished — cafés, terraces and waterside reflections make it one of the most dynamic parts of the route.
4️⃣ Gas Street Basin
Shortly after, you’ll arrive at Gas Street Basin — the historic heart of Birmingham’s canal network. Narrowboats, cast-iron bridges and converging waterways give this area real character.
It’s often the busiest section, so be mindful of pedestrians.
5️⃣ Closing the Loop
From Gas Street Basin, follow the connecting towpaths to complete the circle and return toward your starting point on the Canal Main Line.
The final stretch is flat and uninterrupted — ideal for a steady push to finish
